The Hearts of Geode

Ceramic Vessels - Holding Time (2021)

This series of ceramics is a representation of the time that exists within nature, reflecting on the geometry hidden within organic matters. The vessels are inspired by the natural crystallisation of minerals that are secluded inside geodes. Through natural phenomena, these layers of minerals can take up to a million years to grow depending on their size. Hence, I drew inspiration from the organic shapes of the hollow geode rocks and the geometry of the crystallised minerals inside.

Through the hand-building method of coiling, the structure is constructed layer by layer, referencing the slow process of mineral growth. The organic bodies are free-flowing forms with a bumpy texture, mimicking that of rocks and alluding to the eternal nature of time and its impacts on the interminable rock cycle; while the geometric parts stayed in a solid form, holding time inside the Hearts of Geode. The geometric details are emphasised by carving the clay in its leather hard process as a final finish, symbolising transformation through time. The geodes act as natural vessels which carry priceless crystals; likewise, these vessels convey the invaluable through their craftsmanship, time spent, and labour.

Due to the current pandemic, the clay forms are left in their greenware state; however, it is also a happy coincidence, as its lack of colour effectively conveys the monotonous state of our daily lives which is not unlike the slow, persistent process of crystallisation.

In conclusion, Hearts of Geode responds to the brief of Holding Time by referencing the time-intensive process of crystallisation through both its form dichotomy and the slow process of hand-building.
